Finding good home tutors

In this post, I will like to share how to find a good tutor. I hope the following details will be useful. 🙂

I want to say a Big thank you to all parents who called me to assist them to find good home tutors for their children.

The response was out of my expectations.

I am happy that, so far,  all parents are happy with the tutors I referred. I am so glad that I make new tutor friends on this tuition agency journey too.

How to Find A Good Tutor?

I personally believe word of mouth brings the best recommendation. However, some tutors may not want to travel to your location as it is too far for them.

You may want to consider seeking the help of tuition agencies too. Many of the good tutors I know (myself included) started with registering ourselves with tuition agencies and accepting tuition assignments from them. I am not sure about other tuition agencies but I will personally give the parents a call to find out about the background of the student so that I can effectively help him/her find a suitable tutor.

I will then source for the tutors online or from other students/parents’ recommendation. Besides, necessary background check on the educational certifications of the tutors, I will also send them exam questions for them to complete in a stated period of time. ( Some tutors commented that it is like taking a mini exam. Haha) Then, I will do a phone interview with them to assess their teaching methodology and maturity ( in terms of their accountability and honesty)

After the second session, I will also send an sms/watsapp to both the parent and tutor to ensure that everything is alright and everyone is satisified with the tutoring arrangement. 🙂

During the First Lesson

Do note if;

  • Is the tutor is able to teach the topics in a way your child is able to understand?
  • your child is able to communicate effectively with the tutor?
  • Is the tutor on time and gives your child the undivided attention during the tuition session? I personally warn my the tutors during the interview not to TOUCH phone during the tuition. 🙂

Tuition Goal Setting

I find goal setting very effective for hannahtuition classes.

1) what to achieve? (to get A1 in Maths). Identify goals that are attainable and realistic, one that your child is willing to word towards. Do not expect your child to achieve As when he or she is currently failing the subject.

2) How to measure progress? (usually by mini tests and exams results)

3) Set a time frame to achieve the goal. ( I.e 3 months time). A general guideline will be 1 to 2 grade improvement goals within a 3 months period.

I hope the above information is useful to all parents looking for home tutors. 🙂
